Lusaka is the largest and capital city of Zambia. It is one of the southern Africa fastest developing countries. It is located at an elevation of 1,279 metres in the southern part of the central plateau and 472 kilometres from tourism capital in the northern east. The geology of the city is between the faulted schist in the north and the uneven-depth folded. Also the city lies on a drainage that drains water into the Chongwe River .Phaeozems on the dolomite and leptosols in the schist region are the predominant soils. It has an approximate population of about 3.3 million which is mainly found within the city and 2.5 million which is mostly within the urban as estimated in 2019 and 2018 respectively.It is the centre of both government and commerce in Zambia which connects country’s four main highways which heads to the east,south,west and north. The official city’s administration language is mainly English while street languages include both Bemba and Nyanja that are mainly spoken by the residents within the city. The city is a popular Zambians urban settlement as well as tourist’s settlement. It also experiences three main seasons that include; dry winter that takes place between April and August, warm monsoon season between March to November and hot summer from October to September. Most Zambians residents are mainly Christian’s hence Christian churches and temples are available; for example the Catholic Church (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka).Also Muslim mosques are available for the Islamic religion. Lusaka has got different attraction sites which include ;the Zintu Community Museum, the Political Museum, the Freedom Statue ,Lusaka National Museum, the Zambian National Assembly, the Moore Pottery Factory, a cenotaph, the Lusaka Playhouse theatre,Lusaka Golf Club, the Agricultural Society Showgrounds,National Heroes Stadium, Kalimba Reptile Park, Woodlands Stadium, Monkey Pools and the zoo ,Mulungushi Conference Centre, the Lusaka central sports club Pazuri and botanical gardens of the Munda Wanga Environmental Park. Lusaka is a home of most numerous and largest shopping centers in the country which include; East park, Manda hill, Cosmopolitan and Levy Junction together with Arcade Shopping Centre which is smallest but well known shopping mall. Cairo road is one of the points of interest and main streets in the city in terms of business. Currency used in the city is the Zambian kwacha (ZMW) although the US dollars is also acceptable which is 0.775654 US dollars. It is also a home of Kenneth Kunda International Airport which is used for both military and civil operations. Also it is crossed by the Trans -African highway used for transport. All public vehicles are operated by private sector in the city. Lusaka has developed sports infrastructure which include the Lusaka Golf Club and many others. It is a home of the UNZA Pacers which is the basketball team which is part of the University of Zambia. In addition it is twinned with different international countries for international relations that include; Udon Thani, Thailand (2015) and Beirut, Lebanon (2018) among many others. There are also higher learning institutions in the city such as University of Zambia which is the largest and oldest institution, American International School of Lusaka and Rhodes Park School among many others. Lusaka also acknowledges the existence of notable people within the country such as; the former Zimbabwe cricketer Henry Olonga as the youngest cricketer black person in playing on behalf of Zimbabwe and George Gregan and Corne Ridge as the rugby union players to respectively captain the Australian and south African teams in 2003 and 2002 Tri Nations Series though coincidently born in Lusaka hospital. Finally, Lusaka is the place of residence and hometown for the first conjoined twins luka Banda and Joseph successfully separated by Ben Carson and his team.
There are upmarket clubs and restaurants in the suburbs but many roadside shebeens offer a closer experience of how Zambians “get in the groove” and dance the night away to the sounds of rhumba, kwela, hip hob, or R&B.
